THE QUEENSWAY

Overview

The Queensway is an affordable west-end neighborhood with easy access to downtown and great recreational spots like South Humber Parklands. Once a hidden gem for TV, movie, and commercial shoots, it’s now gaining more attention. With the launch of the Queensway Business Improvement Area and upcoming park upgrades, the neighborhood is set for exciting changes, boosting local pride and activities.

History

The Queensway, once a small farming community, saw urban growth starting in 1912 with the opening of the Queensway Public School. The school expanded over time but closed in 1969 due to a population decline. In the 1990s, the school was demolished for the Price Club, now Costco retail complex, which helped revitalize the neighborhood.

Lifestyle

The Queensway is a shopping hotspot, with the Kipling Queensway Mall at its heart. It’s home to Don Cherry’s Sports Grill, where Don Cherry himself often stops by to chat with guests. The mall also has a big department store and a supermarket. The area’s biggest retailer is the Costco, a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

Homes

The Queensway has a mix of older market-garden cottages and 1940s-1950s two-bedroom bungalows and storey-and-a-half homes. Some frame houses around Queensway Park, built for War Veterans, have been featured in TV shows and films. There are also multiplex rentals and newer townhouses east of Royal York Road.

Recreation

Queensway residents enjoy easy access to South Humber Park, with its open spaces and wooded areas overlooking the Humber Marshes. The park connects to the Martin Goodman Trail, popular with walkers, joggers, cyclists, and skaters. Queensway Park, just north of The Queensway, offers a baseball diamond, tennis courts, and a playground. Nearby Woodford Park, by Mimico Creek, also has a baseball diamond, playground, and tennis courts.

Transportation

Queensway drivers can reach downtown Toronto in about ten minutes via the Gardiner Expressway. For those heading west, the Queen Elizabeth Way is easily accessed from Islington Avenue. Bus service along Royal York and Islington connects to the Bloor-Danforth subway line, with Islington station also offering an express bus to the airport and a link to Mississauga Transit.
